The Local Government Act is being overhauled for the first time in nearly 30 years to pave the way for a more modern, robust and contemporary set of guidelines.

The recently announced Local Government Bill 2019 will deliver six new proposed reforms to support councils and their communities, with an ultimate goal of driving more confidence in the sector.

The proposed Bill is the result of three years of consultation with the sector, peak bodies and Victorian communities.

It provides a clear legislative framework to support councils to provide essential infrastructure and services in their areas.

Despite a number of amendments, this is the first time in nearly three decades that the Act itself has been revised.

With Victoria’s population continuing to grow and communities’ expectations of their council changing, now is the time for new legislation to provide the clarity and structure councils need.

The proposed Bill introduces landmark reforms to empower councils, make them more accountable, and ensure their efforts are focused on the future and the needs of their communities.

This Act for the future will provide greater autonomy to councils giving them the opportunity to be more innovative, collaborative.
