The Victorian Government has released the exposure draft Local Government Bill 2018 for consultation. This follows on from the first comprehensive review of the Local Government Act 1989 in 25 years.
The draft Bill incorporates feedback received during extensive consultation with stakeholders undertaken in 2015 and 2016, including councils, peak bodies, and the community.
The release of the draft Bill is the final opportunity for stakeholders to provide feedback before the proposed legislation is introduced into Parliament in early 2018.
The draft Bill delivers a more contemporary legislative framework that:
- is easy to read
- enables modern council business practices
- clearly outlines councils’ roles and relationship with the community
- enables increased efficiencies and greater autonomy
- strengthens the role of mayors.
